Title A name given to the resource Brodhead Hardware Co. - Pierce Hardware Description An account of the resource The Brodhead Hardware Company - later Pierce Hardware at 910 - 912 West Exchange Street in Brodhead Wisconsin. J. B. Pierce started in the hardware business in Monticello, Wisconsin on August 10, 1891, with his brother-in-law. In January of 1902 he took over the business alone. In 1905 he came to Brodhead and bought out Russell and Johnson. He took on a partner, George Marshall. Other partners were; Fred Marty 1910 - 1916, Earl Bush 1916 - 1930, and J. R. Ties 1930 - 1936. Upon the death of Mr. Ties in 1936 his son Dwight became associated with his father; first as a manager and later as a partner. Upon the death of J. B. Pierce in June 1949 Dwight Pierce became sole owner. Dwight passed away in July 1979 and the store became incorporated. When Dwight became owner the store name was changed to Pierce Hardware. The building was constructed in 1868-69 and was Brodhead's first opera house. The business celebrated it's 80th year in business in 1985. The restoration reveal was held on May 25, 2024. The equipment displayed were a unloader box, munure spreader, and a nitrogen applicator. The people who worked on this project were present. Knight Manufacturing was founded by Stanly Knight and is now Kuhn North America. Title A name given to the resource The Shorb Hotel Description An account of the resource The Shorb Hotel at 904 West Exchange Street in Brodhead, Wisconsin. The front half of this building was originally The Young House built in1868. George Fields acquired 695 acres in a land grant from the United States government in 1843, during the John Tyler administration. John L. V. Thomas purchased 80 acres of this land from Mr. Fields in 1853 for $800. It is on this land that the plat of Brodhead was laid out in 1856. John Young purchased lot 1 of block 100 from Frederick Gombar in 1868. The Young House Hotel was constructed that same year for $16,000. In 1895 it was purchased by Hugh H. Shorb. Mr. Shorb built a matching three story addition to the south and remodeled the building in 1899. It was then the Shorb Hotel. It had 20 sleeping rooms. Mr. Shorb ran the hotel until1940. Salesmen would arrive by train an display their wares in sample rooms in the hotel. Note the carbon-arc streetlight at top center of the photo. Title A name given to the resource A & W Root Beer Stand Description An account of the resource An early photo of the A & W Root Beer Stand in Brodhead, Wisconsin. The building was built in 1954 by Al Rasmussen. He owned the business and he had several managers in the early years. A fire destroyed the building in August of 1958. It was rebuilt and Dale and Louise Roenneburg took over management in 1966. Mr. Rasmussen passed away in 1968 and the Roenneburgs purchased the business. There were many improvements and expansion over the next 15 years. The Roenneburgs employed 115 high school and college students over that time. The drive-in was sold to LeRoy Behrens in 1980 and sold again in 1981 to Jack and Gloria Melvin. The Melvins ran the business until 1990 when it was sold to Gregg and Jane Godfrey. Th e drive-in was closed on October 3, 1993. The building was located on the corner of 17th Street and West Seventh Avenue. The building was removed and the land is now owned by Kuhn North America. There is a newspaper account of an A & W Root Beer Stand opening in Brodhead in May of 1939, however it was at a different location. Universal Foods closed it's cheese factory and gave the building to the City of Brodhead. The factory was located at the corner of 11th Street and West 5th Avenue. Marty leased the building from the city in June of 1988 and formed the Brodhead Potato Company. They produced Uncle Larry's Old Fashioned Potato Chips and in 1990 acquired the Red Dot trademark and made Red Dot Chips also. The building is no longer in existence. Title A name given to the resource Everson Funeral Home Description An account of the resource Everson Funeral Home at 808 First Center Avenue in Brodhead, Wisconsin. The house was built in 1872 for Charles Thompson a lumberman. It was sold to L. W. Terry and then purchased by Tallie E. Everson in 1931. Mr. Everson opened his undertaking business on August 6, 1920 and started with a chapel in the Searles Building downtown. He had purchased land to build a funeral home, but changed his mind and decided to remodel his home to accommodate funerals because he wanted them to have a more homey feel. He opened the present location on May 2, 1931. The funeral home is the oldest in all of Green County having been in business 105 years. Tallie's son, Tallie II, followed in his father's footsteps. The funeral home is in it's third generation and is presently being run by Tallie III. Title A name given to the resource Brodhead Downtown Fire Description An account of the resource On Friday night February 8, 1907 a fire destroyed the southeast half of the 1000 block of downtown Brodhead, Wisconsin. The fire started when a leaking gasoline stove was lite and an explosion occurred. It started in the T. Hellerud Saloon. Businesses destroyed were 2 barber shops, 2 temperance halls, a billiard hall, a bowling alley, a laundry, and a cigar shop. 2 families were also left homeless. The fire department had trouble fighting the blaze because the two nearest hydrants were frozen. Three fireman were badly injured fighting the fire. Title A name given to the resource Reed House / Beckwith House Description An account of the resource The Reed House / Beckwith House at 1006 - 1008 West Exchange Street in Brodhead, Wisconsin. L.S. Fisher settled on the Sugar River 1848, 12 years before Brodhead existed. He built "Fort Fisher", a three story building during the Civil War. It was later named The Reed House, and much later became known as the Beckwith House. It became the home of Miss Helen J. Beckwith who was the granddaughter of L.S. Fisher. Miss Beckwith was born 8/02/1875. She graduated from Brodhead High School in 1893. She was a teacher and librarian for the Brodhead School District. At the age of 22 Al Ringling moved to Brodhead in 1873 to work for Durner and Laube Wagon shop. A bachelor, he took a room on the third floor of the building, at that time known as The Exchange House. He lived here about ten years and put on many circus acts for the locals. In the late 1950's - early 1960's Bob Ryan's Shoe Repair Shop was located in a basement shop. The building was torn down in the 1970's and the area is now the southern terminus and parking lot for The Sugar River State Trail. Bartlet Carriage Factory at 1012 West Third Avenue in Brodhead, Wisconsin. The man in the photo is not identified. The building has been kept in good repair and still exists. It was built in 1881 - 82 by M. Wall. L. C. Bartlett and Sons built carriages, wagons, sleighs, and cutters. The sons were Eugene, Charlie, and Willie. This building is wood frame with matched lumber inside and out, and veneered with brick. The lower floor was the workshop and the second floor was used for the paint trimming of the finished product. Willie Bartlett was a very skilled trimmer. He was assisted by Harry Hill and Al Ringling. At one time the business was three buildings taking up the entire block of the East side of West Third Avenue between West Exchange Street and 11th Street. The blacksmith shop was next to the carriage shop and a showroom on the north end. In later years the building was used for a battery and radio parts shop, an auto repair shop, car sales for Dodge, Hudson, and Essex cars, a Ford tractor dealership, and storage for Newman Seed and Feed. The sign was painted by B. E. Crosby and the original has been restored. It was with the understanding that it would be used as city hall, fire department, Women's Relief Corps, and library. The Brodhead Library was founded in 1906 and was opened on September 26, 1906 . The library opened with 700 books. Former resident William S. Broughton gifted over $10,000 from his estate to be placed in a building fund for a library building. In late 1962 Mr. and Mrs. Ben H. Roderick announced plans to build a new library building. In July 1963 ground was broken and the new library was opened on May 1, 1964 at 902 West Second Avenue. Upon the death of Mr. Roderick the building was deeded to the City of Brodhead. A new library was built in 2008 and opened on March 10, 2009 at 1207 25th Street. The building was built as The Dairy Bar run by Heinie Kueck. He had a five seat counter and sold some groceries and had a meat counter. He sold the business to Jim Speth in 1957 who ran it that way until 1960 when he added a dining room to the north side. Mr. Speth sold it to Jerry Schmitt in 1966. A short time later it was purchased by Carl and Susan Zweifel, they owned it until 1973. Cal and Jean Wickline ran it for a short time and finally it was purchased by Bud Coomer. The Coomers built a new Nabor Inn on First Center Avenue at the south end of town in 1978. The building is now a private residence. The sign reads "Hopkins and Son Horseshoing - Plow Work". It would have been at 1005 West Exchange Street, Brodhead, Wisconsin. The building at the end of the block was The Reed House. It later became the home of Helen Beckwith, and would have been at 1007 - 1009 West Exchange Street. The home at the left belonged to George Pierce, and is still standing. The address is 1009 West Third Avenue. The water tank on the left was used to fill the street sprinkler tank, to keep the dust down. The blacksmith shop became the Mauermann Impllement Building in 1936, with an address of 1003 West Exchange Street. Frank Mauermann was an Allis Chalmers farm machinery dealer. The Methodist Church building was the first completed in the fall of 1858. The bell hung in the church tower, at 1004 Thirteenth Street, until the merger of the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren churches in 1969. When the Methodist church building was sold the bell was removed and put into storage. In the fall of 1975 the bell was rededicated on this site. Title A name given to the resource Timm's Garage Description An account of the resource Timm's Garage and Ford dealership was located at 801 Tenth Street in Brodhead, Wisconsin. It was owned by brothers Bruce and John D. Timm for many years and they were the owners when the dealership closed in Brodhead. The building is no longer there. The area is now the site of storage buildings owned by Jeremy Pinnow. The Timm family was long associated with the Ford dealership in Brodhead. J.C. Timm bought into the firm in 1924 and became sole owner in 1933. He built the pictured building in 1937. J.C.'s son Donald joined the firm when he returned from WW II. Son John D. joined in 1948 and youngest son Bruce bought Donald's partnership in 1954.
