Title A name given to the resource Clarence Covered Bridge Description An account of the resource The Clarence Covered Bridge 2 miles southwest of Brodhead, Wisconsin. The bridge got its' name from a small village that was once a quarter mile to the east. The village was settled in 1841. Before a bridge was built Jacob TenEyck, the closest land owner had a raft that he used to ferrry people across the Sugar River. After a while a bridge was built but, it would wash out every spring when the floods came. The covered bridge was started in 1864. It was completed in 1866 - 67 at a cost of $4,000. It was 130' long and 16' wide. After a time the bridge was settling and a center piling was added. The bridge was enclosed and roofed after it was about two years old. For many years travelers used it for shelter from storms. In the late 1800's highwaymen hide in its' timbers to drop down and rob those passing by. In 1921 a concrete highway was being built from Brodhead to Monroe and a truck carrying heavy equipment tried to cross and broke through the bridge. It was repaired and served travelers well until 1931. As car and truck traffic increased it was deemed inadequate and it was destroyed and a new bridge built. It remains a large part of local history and is the subject of many photos and paintings. It is remembered even today as the City of Brodhead celebrates "Covered Bridge Days" each summer. The building there was erected in 1896. It first housed Fred's Barber Shop. In 1907 W.A. Richardson had a barber shop there, he sold it to his brother, George Richardson in 1909. In 1948 O. W. (Fat) Brager bought the business and he ran it until October of 1974. It is now John's Barber Shop run by John P. Meichtry. The barber at left is Lawerence Heyerdahl, and in his chair is Bob Riese. In 1871 the bank was chartered as the First National Bank of Brodhead. In 1875 the national charter was given up. E. Bowen and J, V. Richardson bought out the stockholders and operated as the Bank of Brodhead. In 1881 Cornelius N. Carpenter bought the banking business. In 1896 several community members secured a state charter and the present Bank of Brodhead was born. It opened on April 30, 1896 with $50,000 capital. Shortly after opening they did business in the Laube Building on the corner of First Center Avenue and West Exchange Street in Brodhead, Wisconsin. Before this building was donated to the city by Henry Clay Putnam the city jail was in a little building just south of the railroad tracks at 1105 First Center Avenue. That building is still standing and has been used for many purposes through the years. Before that offenders were lock up in a freight car in the depot yards. Truman Olin and his brother Ross were born in the cabin. The photo shows Martha Olin and husband Nelson at center. At right is Jim Fitch who lived with them. The three work horses were all the power the farm had. The Cabin no longer exists. In 1953 it became Sutherland's Department Store. When Sutherland's closed it became The Antique Mall. In later years it was Mike's Flooring and is now Brodhead Family Chiropractic and Willow Rae Hair Studio. Hazel Dunwiddie worked at the same store for 50 years, starting in September 1928 and retiring in November 1978.
