Title
Historic Church Bell
Description
This bell was presented by Edward H. Brodhead, chief engineer of the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad, to the Methodist Episcopal Church. He had promised to donate a bell to the first organized church to erect a church building in the new community, provided that the town be named for him. The Methodist Church building was the first completed in the fall of 1858. The bell hung in the church tower, at 1004 Thirteenth Street, until the merger of the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren churches in 1969. When the Methodist church building was sold the bell was removed and put into storage. In the fall of 1975 the bell was rededicated on this site. The bell weighs 795 pounds and cost Mr. Brodhead $400. The bell can be seen in front of the Brodhead United Methodist Church at 501 First Center Avenue, Brodhead, Wisconsin.
