The Shorb Hotel
Description
The Shorb Hotel at 904 West Exchange Street in Brodhead, Wisconsin. The front half of this building was originally The Young House built in1868. George Fields acquired 695 acres in a land grant from the United States government in 1843, during the John Tyler administration. John L. V. Thomas purchased 80 acres of this land from Mr. Fields in 1853 for $800. It is on this land that the plat of Brodhead was laid out in 1856. John Young purchased lot 1 of block 100 from Frederick Gombar in 1868. The Young House Hotel was constructed that same year for $16,000. In 1895 it was purchased by Hugh H. Shorb. Mr. Shorb built a matching three story addition to the south and remodeled the building in 1899. It was then the Shorb Hotel. It had 20 sleeping rooms. Mr. Shorb ran the hotel until1940. Salesmen would arrive by train an display their wares in sample rooms in the hotel. Note the carbon-arc streetlight at top center of the photo.
