Description
The Brodhead Hardware Company - later Pierce Hardware at 910 - 912 West Exchange Street in Brodhead Wisconsin. J. B. Pierce started in the hardware business in Monticello, Wisconsin on August 10, 1891, with his brother-in-law. In January of 1902 he took over the business alone. In 1905 he came to Brodhead and bought out Russell and Johnson. He took on a partner, George Marshall. Other partners were; Fred Marty 1910 - 1916, Earl Bush 1916 - 1930, and J. R. Ties 1930 - 1936. Upon the death of Mr. Ties in 1936 his son Dwight became associated with his father; first as a manager and later as a partner. Upon the death of J. B. Pierce in June 1949 Dwight I Pierce became sole owner. Dwight passed away in July 1979 and the store became incorporated. When Dwight became owner the store name was changed to Pierce Hardware. The building was constructed in 1868-69 and was Brodhead's first opera house. The business celebrated it's 80th year in business in 1985.
