Description

Inside the old Brodhead Public Library upstairs at 1103 West Second Avenue in Brodhead, Wisconsin. The building housing the library, known as the Putnam building, was donated to the City of Brodhead by Mayor and State Senator Putnam. It was with the understanding that it would be used as city hall, fire department, Women's Relief Corps, and library. The Brodhead Library was founded in 1906 and was opened on September 26, 1906 . The library opened with 700 books. Former resident William S. Broughton gifted over $10,000 from his estate to be placed in a building fund for a library building. In late 1962 Mr. and Mrs. Ben H. Roderick announced plans to build a new library building. In July 1963 ground was broken and the new library was opened on May 1, 1964 at 902 West Second Avenue. Upon the death of Mr. Roderick the building was deeded to the City of Brodhead. A new library was built in 2008 and opened on March 10, 2009 at 1207 25th Street.
